Ecosystem Volunteer Day, Thursdays, September 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, from 1:00 until 4:00 pm. Check-in at Visitor Center, Volunteers will help by tending to the fields, weeding, planting, and harvesting the farm's produce. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals or groups with an interest in sustainable agriculture, organic farming, or environmental stewardship. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive early as a brief, dedicated tour will be given promptly at 1:00 p.m. Please be prepared to work in the outdoors wearing appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring work gloves, sunscreen, hats, snacks, and plenty of water. African American Heritage Day, Saturday, September 25, from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm, at the National Colonial Farm, rain or shine, $5 admission, Members free, Children 2 and under free, "Common Ground: Connecting Food, Land, and History" will be an entertaining exploration of African American culture with a special focus on foodways of the region. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the event honors the role that African Americans have played in our regional and national history and culture. Listen to the Archie Edwards Blues Foundation perform songs about food. Learn the history of African American foodways in the region as Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson leads a panel of scholars and experts. Hear Jim Cummins, Director of the Living Resources of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, talk about fish in the Potomac, and then participate in a fishing lesson at the Accokeek Foundation's popular fishing pier. Enjoy an Iron Chef competition organized by Ronald LeGrand, who has volunteered for many years with Real Men Cook. Other attractions include artist Lorina Harris guiding young and old in making art with food, a "market' area with food vendors including Damian Mosley of Blacksauce Kitchen and 'Doc" Shields, and entertainment by Vera Oye Yaa-Anna, a West African culinary storyteller. Foodways expert Michael Twitty will give living history foodways demonstrations in the kitchen area of the farm. Actors in our award-winning museum theater program will present a short performance crafted from oral history interviews gathered at last year's African American Heritage Day. A History of Black Hill's Bald Eagles, Saturday, September 18, from 1:00 until 2:30 pm. Black Hill Regional Park has been luck to be home to our national bird, the bald eagle. Bats & Beavers Pontoon Boat Cruise, Wednesday, September 1, from 6:00 until 7:30 pm and Thursday, September 23, from 5:30 until 7:30 pm. Use binoculars to find beaver lodges and feeding sites, and (hopefully) beavers! Soon insectivorous bats will appear, and the ultrasonic transducer bat detector will tell where they're feeding and flying. Children must be at least 6, and accompanied by an adult. Family Stream Adventure, Saturday, September 18, from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm. Bring the family and take a short trail walk along the Cabin Branch stream. There will be kids' activities planned along the path focusing on the natural world, and point out interesting plants, insects and animals along the way. We'll paddle up some of the smaller branches of the river to look for beavers, birds, and flowering wetland plants. Please arrive promptly at the starting time. Amazing Marbled Salamanders, Wednesday, September 15, from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. (1361 Wrighton Road, Lothian, MD 20711) The marbled salamander is our only fall-breeding amphibian, and they spend most of their lives underground. However, they move in large numbers on rainy nights in the fall to their breeding ponds. Their peak migration falls near September 15th, but there has to be rain! Spend an evening at Jug Bay to learn about the biology of the marbled salamander and watch these amazing animals on the move. Butterfly expert Dick Smith will present a slide show on barrens butterflies and then lead the group for about 2 miles along trails through the globally rare serpentine barrens ecosystem at Soldiers Delight. In addition to locally-occurring and serpentine-endemic late summer butterflies such as the attractive Leonard’s Skipper, you will examine and identify many native grasses and wildflowers seldom seen in abundance in other locations around Maryland. Bats and Bugs, September 3, from 6:30 until 8:00 pm. Search the night sky for the amazing world of bats. This will be a great evening to learn some fascinating facts about our backyard bug-zappers. Also get a chance to see all the incredible insects that bats like to eat. No flashlights please! Age: 8 and up, fee $5.00.
Butterfly Bonanza, September 4, from 1:00 until 2:30 pm. It may be warm outside, but that’s the way butterflies like it! Go for this short walk through the fields and meadows of the park in search of the many different butterflies that are found here. Age: families, fee $5.00.
Mother Nature, Mom & Me, September 7 through November 5, 3 sessions Tuesdays OR Fridays, Tuesdays 9/7, 10/5, and 11/2 or Fridays 9/10, 10/8 and 11/5, from 11:00 until 11:45 am. The children should bring a mom, dad, grandparent or significant adult, and dress for the weather, as they always spend some time outside for this fabulous preschool program at Piney Run Nature Center! Learn about nature through outdoor and indoor activities, crafts, songs and stories. Age: 4-6 years, fee $18/child
Outdoor Rangers, September 8, October 13, & November 10, 3 sessions, from 1:00 until 2:30 pm or 4:30 until 6:00 pm Children learn about nature through a short lesson and a hike outdoors, so be sure to dress for the weather. Parents are always welcome to stay for the program and accompany us on the hike, but it is required only if the child needs a little extra help. Age: 6-11, first-fifth grade, fee: $18 Dragonfly Day, September 12, from 2:00 until 3:30 pm. The warm summer weather provides the ideal conditions that dragonflies and damselflies like. Search around the pond and meadows for these amazing aerodynamic insects and learn why they are so helpful to people. Wear shoes that can get wet or muddy. Age: 7-adult (under age 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult). Piney Run Explorers, September 16, October 14 & November 18, from 10:00 until 11:30 am. A program for home-schooled students who want to learn more about nature and how to care for the environment. Each class includes an indoor learning time, with students researching and discussing a different topic each month, and a related outdoor exploration or project in Piney Run Park. Students should wear proper outdoor footwear and dress for the weather, as we will usually go outside. Age: 10-13 years, fee $18.
Morning Bird Walks, Thursday, September 16, at 8:30 am. Venture outside and join Dave Harvey of the Carroll County Ornithological Society, for a morning bird walk. Search for many different types of songbirds, waterfowl, raptors, and woodpeckers that inhabit Piney Run Park. Beginning birders welcome. Binoculars and field guides are recommended to bring along, and walks are rain or shine. Age: 10-adult. Meet at front door of Nature Center. Fee $5.00
Autumnal Equinox Campfire, September 17, from 7:00 until 8:00 pm. It’s almost time for fall, so let’s celebrate with a campfire! Bring the family for this evening of stories and s’mores! We’ll even learn about some animals that start stirring as dusk approaches. Age: all. Meet at PR Amphitheatre. Fee: $7
Wild and Woolly, September 29, from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. What’s that creeping along in the woods – let’s see it is brown with some black stripes – and we may use them to tell the weather! Must be a woolly bear caterpillar! Come to the Nature Center and learn some interesting facts followed by a craft. Age: 4-and up. Fee: $7
